Job Description

Aviation Deicing Equipment Maintenance Technician

Location: Washington–Dulles International Airport (IAD)

Employer: Inland Deicing Services (IDS)

Compensation: $33.00 per hour | Full-time

A day in this role

You clock in before sunrise, the ramp lights cast long shadows, and the air is crisp. You start with a quick once-over of the deicer trucks, GRV (Glycol Recovery Vehicle) units, support vehicles, and ground support equipment. A hydraulic line gets your attention — you diagnose it quickly, reference schematics, and bring the system back to spec. By mid-morning, you’re updating maintenance logs, ordering parts, and coordinating the next round of preventive checks. When the call comes from operations, you’re the steady hand that ensures every aircraft can be deiced safely and on time.

What you’ll handle

  • Own local maintenance scheduling and performance to keep equipment mission-ready and dependable.
  • Carry out skilled maintenance technician tasks using established procedures and best practices.
  • Interpret and apply maintenance manuals, illustrated parts catalogs, schematics, blueprints, and related technical documents.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve electrical and hydraulic issues within defined timeframes.
  • Complete precise maintenance records; perform both scheduled and unscheduled inspections.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; minimum age 18.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Proficient in English for reading, writing, following instructions, and giving verbal direction.
  • Clear hearing and speech; basic to intermediate computer skills.
  • Bring your own core tools: sockets/wrenches up to 1 inch and up to 1/2 inch drive.
  • Strong time management; ability to juggle shifting priorities and deadlines.
  • Knowledge of fluid types, diesel-powered systems, tools, repair methods, and maintenance practices.
  • Experienced with standard and specialty diagnostic equipment (e.g., photo tachometer, diagnostic tools/hardware, scanners, meters).
  • Professional discretion with confidential information; tact when working with employees and client representatives.
  • Willingness to travel to other IDS airport stations as needed (TDY).

Schedule

  • Winter Operations: Monday–Friday, 5:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., as required by operational needs.
  • Shoulder Season: Flexible — either five 8-hour days or four 10-hour days.
  • Typical seasonal window: October through April.

Benefits

  • Health, dental, and life insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Employee Assistance Program
  • Employee discounts
  • Competitive wages
  • Flexible schedule
  • Advancement opportunities
  • On-the-job training
  • $300 referral bonuses (unlimited)
  • DailyPay

Work environment

Hands-on, physically demanding setting in and around heavy moving equipment. Expect prolonged standing, exposure to varying temperatures and humidity, high noise levels at times, and occasional unpleasant but safe odors.

Physical demands

  • Manual dexterity to handle tools, parts, and controls; reach with hands and arms.
  • Effective speech and hearing.
  • Extended periods of sitting, standing, walking; frequent bending, stooping, pushing, and pulling.
  • Lift up to 50 pounds.

Proficiencies

  • Heavy Equipment Repair
  • Electrical Troubleshooting
