Middle School Learning Specialist – Leave Replacement

St. Michael’s Country Day School, a private, independent school committed to fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment to help students become courageous learners, who are caring citizens and world ready, seeks a compassionate and experienced Learning Specialist to serve as a leave replacement in our Middle School (Grades 6–8). This is a temporary position supporting students with diverse learning needs from January through June. While the role is currently limited to the remainder of the school year, there is potential for continued employment in the following school year based on program needs and performance.

The Learning Specialist will work closely with students, classroom teachers, and the Learning Support Team to ensure academic success by providing direct support, in-class assistance, and appropriate modifications and accommodations. The specialist will also teach a class focused on executive functioning skills, helping students develop strategies for organization, time management, and self-advocacy.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide academic support to middle school students during the school day
  • Attend and support students in their general education classrooms
  • Implement and monitor academic accommodations and modifications
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to align strategies and supports
  • Teach an executive functioning class to help students build essential learning skills
  • Communicate with the Learning Support Team and relevant faculty as needed

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in Special Education, Education, or related field preferred
  • Prior experience working with middle school students with learning differences
  • Strong understanding of accommodations, modifications, and executive functioning strategies
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Flexible, team-oriented, and student-centered

Schedule & Commitment:

  • Beginning in January and concluding in June of 2026, with the potential to be full time for the 26-27 school year as well if mutually desired.

The Location

The school’s well-appointed 7-acre campus overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and is situated in historic Newport, Rhode Island, minutes from some of the most impressive beaches and coastal landscapes that New England has to offer. Newport and the beaches of Aquidneck Island are destination locations and teachers have the opportunity to integrate the geographic and cultural surroundings into their curricular programming. There are numerous universities and colleges close by, including, Salve Regina, University of Rhode Island, Brown, Rhode Island School of Design, Providence College and Roger Williams, adding to the cultural and intellectual climate of the area. Providence is a short drive (35 minutes), Boston is a bit more (1 hour and 30 minutes) and New York City (4 hours) is close enough for a weekend trip. This is a highly desirable place to live and work.
