Interested in an opportunity to join a dynamic and diverse team at the Wildlife Health Laboratory. Learn more about this unique limited-term position! Under the supervision of the Environmental Program Manager I of the Wildlife Health Laboratory (WHL) the incumbent will apply epidemiologic and biostatistical methods to collect, analyze, and interpret data to inform public health and wildlife management decisions. This position supports statewide wildlife disease surveillance programs, with a primary focus on Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) [federal grant funded project (G2598036)]. This role integrates epidemiologic research, field operations, laboratory coordination, and stakeholder engagement to inform science-based management of game species health. The incumbent applies statistical and geospatial tools to analyze surveillance data, leads training and sampling efforts, and contributes to collaborative research and outreach initiatives.

This is a full-time limited term position for 2 years, 40 hours/week position. The position may be extended or become permanent.

This position is a 12-month Limited Term (LT) and may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent.

Working Conditions

Willingness to work irregular hours including weekends and holidays and to travel in performing field work throughout the State. Field activities may include strenuous physical activity in variable weather conditions for up to 10 hours. Ability to work outdoors in remote areas with uneven terrain. Ability to lift heavy and irregular items (up to 40 lbs.) required. Ability to drive for extended periods of time (up to 8 hours), if required. Possession of a valid driver license required. Office setting requires using computer keyboard at least several hours a day and involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods. Occasional meetings at Sacramento-area offices required. In addition to working with Sacramento-based staff, may interact with Branch and Regional staff and members of the public, in the field, via e-mail and telephone. Will primarily work in a laboratory setting and/or remotely in congruence with COVID-19 safety best practices. The position may require the incumbent to wear a uniform identifying the employee as CDFW staff.

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

Experience in common laboratory methods, wildlife disease, disease surveillance and disease ecology, basic principles of wildlife and resource management, land use practices with reference to their effect on human health, natural resources, and agricultural produc tion.
